Faculty Position in Global Health

The Department of Biology at Georgetown University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level. We are interested in applicants whose research efforts are in an area of global health, broadly defined, including infectious, chronic or genetic diseases. This research will complement ongoing efforts in global health, including our new major in the Biology of Global Health. Successful candidates will have established research programs with external support. Applicants will be expected to teach one course per semester, mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, and maintain an active extramurally funded research program.

The Department is located in the College of Arts & Sciences and has ties with the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, the O’Neill Institute for National and International Health Law, the Georgetown Health Policy Institute and the Georgetown University Medical Center. Georgetown University is located in Washington, D.C. with close proximity to the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Food & Drug Administration, Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well as health policy and international institutions such as the World Bank, the United Nations Foundation, Pan-American Health Organization, etc.

Laboratory Assistant Professor

The Department of Biology of Georgetown University invites applications for a full-time Laboratory Assistant Professor with a flexible start date during the Fall semester of 2009. We seek an enthusiastic science educator to actively collaborate with faculty in the development and deployment of our ecology, evolution and behavior (EEB) curriculum. We especially encourage applications from science educators able to develop and offer inquiry-based, active learning pedagogy. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for the laboratory component, and contribute to lecture activities, of one semester of Foundations in Biology (EEB). Duties in the alternate semester are to provide laboratory and instructional support to upper-level undergraduate EEB courses. Applicants should have enthusiasm for science education and a PhD in biology with an emphasis in EEB or a Masters degree in science and/or science education. Applicants should possess excellent writing and speaking skills; be well organized and able to carry out position duties independently; have the ability to provide individual and group instruction with an awareness of diverse learning styles; be able to train and manage undergraduate and graduate TAs; and be able to teach effectively in lecture, field and laboratory contexts. This is a nine month position with the possibility to teach in our summer school for additional compensation. Adjunct Instructors

The Department of Biology is recruiting adjunct faculty to teach undergraduate courses in Biochemistry and Microbiology for Spring 2010. The Biochemistry instructor will teach three 50-minute lectures per week to a class of 80-100 sophomores, juniors and seniors, hold weekly office hours and develop and administer student assessments. The course also includes a 3 hour laboratory which is taught by a full-time instructor. Microbiology will also be taught as three 50-minute lectures, but is limited to 24 juniors and seniors. It also includes a three-hour laboratory taught by a full-time instructor. Applicants should hold doctoral degrees in an appropriate discipline. Teaching experience is preferred.
