Senior Thesis - Teaching Biology

This thesis project will engage students in the development and teaching of high school biology curriculum modules. Students will have the opportunity to explore topics in Biology of great interest to them and grapple with conveying the theory and practice of these topics to high school students through classes, laboratories, and projects.

This thesis option is available to majors in Biology, the Biology of Global Health and Environmental Biology (but not to students majoring in Neurobiology).  Students apply to this program in the fall of the junior year.

For this thesis option, students will enroll in

• Teaching Biology - an Introduction (BIOL-330, 3-credits, spring). Students accepted into the Teaching Thesis option are required to enroll in BIOL-330 Teaching Biology during their junior year.  This course will introduce students to the theory of teaching through readings, discussion and projects.  Staff
  
  
• Senior Thesis Tutorial (BIOL-300-04, 1-credit, spring).  This course will enable students to develop preliminary lesson plans and to define a scholarship of teaching and learning question for the thesis year.  Enroll in section 04.  Prof. Elmendorf
  
  
• Senior Thesis - Teaching Biology (BIOL-331, 1-credit, fall; BIOL-332, 3-credits, spring).  These course will allow students to investigate their scholarship of teaching and learning question, to develop, refine and execute lesson plans, and to write and revise the thesis.  Enroll in the section number for the faculty member who is advising you on the project.
