Department of Biology

News from the 2007-2008 Academic Year

August: The Department of Biology is very pleased to welcome new faculty members Gina Wimp and Chris Elsik, who are beginning this fall.  Gina is a community ecologist while Chris is a bioinformaticist analyzing and annotating genomes. 

May: The Department of Biology announces the establishment of two new majors offered. Neurobiology will focus on understanding of the nervous system and the Biology of Global Health will focus on understanding the biological bases for human health in the global arena. The Department will continue to offer the Biology major that will appeal to students interested in a broader understanding of biology.

2007 Commencement: Professor Joseph Neale received the Distinguished Career in Research Award for his work on understanding communication between neurons.  His laboratory has been focused on understanding the neuropeptide NAAG, its receptors and its metabolism.  Professor Neale is the Paduano Distinguished Professor, Director of the Howard Hughes Scholars Program and an alumni of the College.  Congratulations!

2007 Commencement: Christopher Drummond, who received his Ph.D. degree in 2006, received the prestigious Harold N. Glassman Dissertation Award for his work "Phylogenetic relationship, mating systems and population structure in Lupinus (Leguminosae)".  Congratulations!
