Eligibility requirements
You must be
- A citizen or permanent resident of the Unites States or its possessions
- Still a full-time college student as of August 2016 (i.e., you must not have graduated before that time)
- Available to participate full-time in the REU program (Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with flexibility for the demands of different kinds of research) and live on-campus for the duration of the ten weeks
We are striving for a diverse pool of participants and strongly encourage applications from students belonging to populations typically underrepresented in the sciences (e.g., minorities, women, and first-generation college students). Students whose home institutions can’t provide similar in-depth research experiences are also strongly encouraged to apply.
The application
The application consists of four parts: a completed application form, a personal statement, an unofficial transcript, and two letters of recommendation (to be sent directly from your letter-writers).
- Application Form. Please download this form and complete it; Make sure to save this file with your last name in the filename, e.g. “Ehrlich_app.pdf”.
- Personal Statement. In addition to completing and uploading the above form, please prepare a personal statement that describes either your research interests, research ambitions, and/or career ambitions and goals. Which of these you emphasize will, of course, depend on where you are in your studies. We simply want to know what motivates you and why you think this program will help you. Limit the personal statement to 2 pages (<~1000 words). Make sure to save this file with your last name in the filename, e.g. “Ehrlich_statement.pdf”
- Transcript. Please submit an unofficial transcript that includes any coursework completed prior to January 1, 2016.
- Letters of Recommendation. Please arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent by your letter-writers directly to the program coordinator, Prof. Manus Patten, at mmp64@georgetown.edu. The subject line of the email should read: “REU letter for [Last name]” Please ask your letter writers to speak to your potential for conducting independent research.
