Department Opportunities

The Biology Department participates in a number of opportunities for members of our community to directly engage in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the sciences. These opportunities include:

Regents STEM Scholars Program

The Regents STEM Scholars Program is a wing of the Community Scholars Program, seeking to support first-generation, low-income, underrepresented minority students with a love of the natural and quantitative sciences. We bring ~25 students each year into the program, joining a vibrant community of students and faculty. The program provides participants with unique coursework, research opportunities, mentoring, and funding to support their ambitions.

RISE&Teach

RISE&Teach provides seniors from across the sciences with the opportunity to serve as student teachers in science classrooms in the District of Columbia Public Schools. Students receive formal training in culturally responsive science pedagogy, discuss the systemic inequities and barriers in our nation’s educational system that disadvantage people of color, develop and teach lessons, and rigorously study their own teaching practices.

Georgetown University Math and Science Hands-On Enrichment (GUMSHOE)

GUMSHOE is DC’s largest student-run math and science outreach organization. Operating out of the Center for Social Justice, over 90 Georgetown undergraduate and graduate students serve as tutors for hundreds of elementary, middle, and high school students around Washington, D.C.

Georgetown University Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (GUMAPS)

GUMAPS is dedicated to increasing awareness of health disparities worldwide, thereby ensuring a diverse range of future health professionals that are not only ethnically competent and culturally sensitive, but socially conscious as well. GUMAPS supports the academic and extracurricular requirements of pre-health students and welcomes all.:
