This month, the Reis Lab is proud to announce their role in publishing twenty years of data on US butterfly population trends. The group managed an online platform that 35 different butterfly research centers across the country used to organize and share their data. In what some experts are calling a “much-needed, herculean assessment” the teams coordinated the counting of over 12.6 million individual butterflies. The study reports an overall 22% decline in numbers between 2000 and 2020. The study sheds critical light on the effects of environmental shifts across the country. The project was recently published in the Science journal as well as a graphics feature in the New York Times.
